Farmington approves grant funding for new bus shelters

At its December 1 City Council meeting, the Farmington City Council unanimously approved the use of Oakland County Transportation grant funds to potentially construct three new pedestrian shelters at key bus stop locations throughout the city.

In May 2025, the City of Farmington was awarded a $100,000 transportation grant from Oakland County through an 80/20 funding match. Oakland County will contribute $80,000 toward the project, with the City providing a $20,000 local match. The next step is to work with Michigan Department of Transportation for site approvals.

The project is designed to improve the hardscape surrounding several existing bus stops and to support the construction of pedestrian shelters. Improvements will focus primarily on sidewalk reconstruction to ensure Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and to create safe, functional, and accessible areas for the shelters. The improvements are intended to make the bus stops more welcoming and comfortable for riders while improving overall accessibility.

Six potential locations for pedestrian shelters were initially evaluated. Based on usage, accessibility, and feasibility, the following three locations were recommended for construction:

  • Jamestown Apartments
  • Chatham Hills Apartments (western stop location)
  • Near the intersection of Drake Road and Grand River Avenue

“This project reflects the City’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure and accessibility for residents and visitors,” explained City Manager David Murphy.

Construction timelines and additional project details will be shared as they become available. Maps of the proposed locations can be found here
