Fred Warner, the only Farmington resident to become governor of Michigan, turns 150 this July. Join the party at Fred’s house! On Thursday, July 9, Farmington’s house museum of local history will continue its summer porch party series with “Fred Warner’s 150th Birthday Bash,” a sesquicentennial extravaganza of games, cake, balloons, and family fun for all.
The event will take place from 7–9 p.m. at the historic 1867 Governor Warner Mansion. Try your hand at Victorian games that Fred and his family would have played 150 years ago on these very grounds, such as horseshoes, badminton, and croquet. Face painting and balloon toys for the kids will also be available, courtesy of local clown “HER.” And all ages will enjoy special birthday-themed activities throughout the evening: try your hand at “pin the mustache on Fred” for guaranteed laughs.
Birthday cake will be served on the porch, and Warner souvenirs will be available for sale, including T-shirts, books, and limited-edition drink coasters featuring Fred and his Farmington home. Live ragtime piano music by “The Boogie Woogie Kid” Matthew Ball will create a nostalgic backdrop for the evening while keeping everyone’s toes tapping. So bring your dancing shoes and get ready to party like it’s 1865!
Don’t forget to check out the special exhibit on the porch, featuring Fred’s birthplace in Hickling, England. Learn about his trip to Michigan as a baby and twist-of-fate adoption by one of Farmington’s leading families!
Entrance is $5 per person, payable at the door, and children under 8 are free. A limited number of chairs will be available, but guests are encouraged to bring their own, as a large crowd is expected. Special thanks go to the Farmington Historical Commission, the sponsor for the evening’s festivities.
The final porch party of the season, “Floats and Farmington History,” will be held on Thursday, August 6, 7–9 p.m. The Governor Warner Mansion is located at 33805 Grand River Avenue, two blocks west of Farmington Road.
